OVERTIME
Salary alone doesn’t make a job exempt from overtime.
MEAL & REST BREAKS
Missed breaks generally carry one additional hour of pay per workday.
REPRESENTATIVE CLAIMS
Employees can bring claims on behalf of the state for certain wage violations.
Understanding your rights
California’s wage and hour laws are among the most protective in the country. They set rules for minimum wage, overtime, meal and rest breaks, pay records, final pay and expense reimbursement. When pay practices fall short, employees may be owed wages and, in some cases, additional amounts provided by law.
Whether an employee is entitled to overtime and breaks depends in part on how the job is classified.
